What Label Information Should You Request From a China Supplier?

Label applicability is product- and market-specific

There is no universal “China supplier label” that makes a product compliant. Requirements can depend on the product category, materials and components, intended user, claims, destination market, sales channel, importer/responsible party, package level and exact configuration. CPSC’s U.S. overview explicitly notes variation by product type, design, components and intended users, while FDA publishes separate product-specific requirements such as cosmetics labeling. Treat official sources and qualified review as the decision basis.

Ask for the production specification, not only artwork

editable source and print-ready file, with revision and approval status;
label material, adhesive, finish, dimensions, colours and legibility constraints;
exact placement drawing or annotated product/package image;
variable-data fields, data source, format, example syntax and responsible operator;
print method, inspection method and acceptance criteria;
unit/inner/carton/pallet mapping and barcode relationship;
language variants and controls that prevent the wrong market version being packed;
change history and required buyer approval before artwork, data or placement changes.

Country-of-origin, warnings and regulated claims need review

Country-of-origin marking is a legal/customs question, not a phrase to copy from another product. CBP rulings illustrate that U.S. marking analysis is made for the article and facts presented. Warnings, responsible-party information, certification marks, environmental claims and regulated statements can also depend on the product and market. Record the official source, version/access date, reviewer, scope and unresolved question. Do not ask the supplier to “make it compliant” without a controlled requirement.

Supplier draft does not equal compliance approval

A supplier can prepare artwork and production specifications, but the buyer should know who made the underlying applicability determination. A draft may contain a familiar mark, address or warning and still be wrong for the model, market or responsible party. Treat it as supplier-provided evidence until buyer review and, where required, qualified independent review are complete.
